One of the strengths of the ABC’s 1980s set drama is the way it uses the past to illuminate attitudes and values of the present day.
I’ve been thinking a lot about wigs lately. Not just any old wigs, wigs from the 1980s, or rather, wigs that mimic the coiffed, enormous hair of the 1980s. I’ve finally gotten stuck into the Cold War spy drama which is long overdue, but in my defence there can be a comfort in starting a show knowing exactly how many seasons you’ve got waiting for you., the slick, addictive and excellent local drama that might be the best show Australia has produced in years.
On the news desk, Geoff is a paean of respectability and that kind of Old Boys wealth that almost makes him sound English. Helen is dynamic, glamorous and represents a new dawn for what stories are deemed worth covering in the mainstream. When they’rethe desk, Geoff is a grumpy goat who is furious at what he sees as the triviality taking over Australian news and longs for the days of reporting from a foxhole in Vietnam .
Their uneasy dynamic is challenged by calls for Geoff’s retirement, their overbearing and bigoted boss Lindsay , and illness that pulls them both away from the desk. Bubbling in the background is a newcomer called Dale Jennings who has so much ambition swirling inside him that he almost looks like he’s in pain every time he sees Geoff and Helen step up to the desk every night.
