Susan Greenfield has been doing the rounds talking to investors and potential collaborators about her breakthrough Alzheimer’s technology.

Now high-profile British scientist Susan Greenfield is ready to move to human trials using a radical approach that targets neurodegeneration long before it can be detected on traditional brain scans.

Unlike other approaches that target amyloid plaque protein deposits – which affect memory and cognitive function and can only be detected when the disease is relatively advanced – NeuroBio’s novel technology is based on a previously unknown neuro-chemical called T14 and a new drug type, NBP14, that has been shown to restore memory in mice.

Professor Greenfield, who is a regular visitor to Australia and was made an honorary Australian of the year in 2006, is seeking to raise £20 million to take the drug to phase 1 clinical trials. Last year in the US, the powerful Food and Drug Administration approved Biogen’s drug aducanumab – the first Alzheimer’s treatment to be approved for 18 years. While approved for use in a wide range of patients, the drug is administered by a monthly intravenous infusion that requires patients to have regular MRI scans, because it can cause swelling or hemorrhaging in the brain.
