A man dressed in grey pants, a black coat and tie calmly pulled a large knife out of the scrum on London Bridge, put it in his right hand and slowly walked south out of harm's way.
Their actions were a far cry from official police advice about what to do in a firearms or weapons attack, which is to "run, hide and tell".
He and others then ran as armed police shouted 'Get back, get back'. The last remaining member of the public who was on top of the attacker had to be dragged away by a policeman. The suspect died at the scene and the whole footpath confrontation was over in less than 45 seconds. The rampage started at the nearby Fishmongers' Hall, a historic building to the north of London Bridge. Two people were killed and three injured.
The incident triggered wide panic in a city that is no stranger to terror. On the north bank of the River Thames, police officers shouted to pedestrians to move back from the bridge and take shelter in any nearby building, screaming: "Move inside for your own safety." Smith said the incident revived dark memories of the 2017 attack, which left a bullet hole in the window of his Borough Market office. During that incident, eight people were killed and 48 injured. Much like this latest incident, patrons defended themselves and protected others by throwing chairs and tables at the terrorists.
