Researchers say there is evidence that previously unknown breeding 'nurseries' for critically endangered green sawfish could disappear due to continuing habitat loss in northern Western Australia.
A researcher has shared concerns over whether development could impact green sawfish nurseries and populations.
Murdoch University researcher Jack Ingelbrecht has spent the past decade analysing the critically endangered marine animal's reproductive behaviour in the Ashburton River, 1,300km north of Perth.Dr Ingelbrecht's research has revealed green sawfish, which can grow to be up to seven metres long, will return to the same locations to give birth, a previously unknown behaviour.
However, if one of those nurseries does suffer environmental degradation, Dr Ingelbrecht said it could mean serious trouble for the already critically endangered marine animals. The Ashburton River is in WA's Pilbara region, which is home to some of the state's largest mining and industrial projects — including the towns of Tom Price and Paraburdoo.
"If a population does get depleted because females are returning to the same region, it means that other populations that have become depleted are unlikely to be replenished."
