Oklahoma's bounce-back seasons were short and swift. The Sooners are back atop the Big 12 — and college football.
DALLAS — When Oklahoma players returned to campus in January for winter workouts earlier this year, they began sessions with medicine ball sit-ups, always the first part of team training workouts. In 2022, the first season under head coach Brent Venables and head strength and conditioning coach Jerry Schmidt, Oklahoma players had done 25 sit-ups each, on Schmidt’s count. During this January period, players hit 25 … and Schmidt kept counting. All the way to 49. Advertisement 49-0.
A state senator proposed that three inches of a desolate panhandle highway be named “Lincoln Riley Highway.” Fans took it hard. They’ll never get over it. Venables came in with an elite track record, as an assistant on Oklahoma’s 2000 national championship team and the defensive coordinator of two national title teams at Clemson. He would fix the defense, keep recruiting at a high level and the Sooners would not drop off. Then 49-0 happened. Then 6-7 happened.
