Britain’s highest court will today hear appeals against Prime Minister Boris Johnson's decision to suspend Parliament for five weeks right before the October 31 Brexit deadline.

The Queen approved Johnson’s request for suspension in August, but lawmakers from all parties are demanding Parliament be recalled so that they can debate pressing Brexit issues.

Anti-Brexit protesters gathered outside the Supreme Court as proceedings got underway on Tuesday, holding signs that read “Defend our Democracy” and “Don't silence our MPs.”: Parliament was suspended—or prorogued—last Monday following months of political deadlock among British lawmakers. The suspension meant MPs are not due to return until October 14, when a Queen’s speech outlining the government’s agenda will take place.
