The thousands who pounded the bitumen on Sunday may have worked up a sweat, but with an even hotter day forecast on Monday, they should count their blessings.

The 30,000 people who took to the bitumen in Sunday’s Bridge to Brisbane were likely counting their blessings, as well as their kilometres.

Donning either serious racing gear or something more on the fun side for the annual event, participants were met with blue skies and a top of 31 degrees. While hot, those conditions were perhaps a little more comfortable than the maximum of 34 forecast for Monday – seven degrees above October’s average.

Paramedics said only two people were hospitalised for minor injuries during the 10- or 4.5-kilometre run from the Gateway Bridge to the RNA Showgrounds. The heat is not expected to hang around, with maximum temperatures for Brisbane expected to drop to 27 on Tuesday before a cloudy 24 degrees on Wednesday.

Some of this year’s 30,000 participants cross the Gateway Bridge on their way to the RNA Showgrounds.
