A new permit for a drug and alcohol wellness centre has sparked safety fears in one of Melbourne's most exclusive suburbs, with concerned residents urging their local member and council to take action.

Almost 100 locals attended a public meeting on Tuesday afternoon to voice their concerns that a drug rehabilitation program - assisting those addicted to ice, alcohol, marijuana, cocaine and heroin - was being operated in the family-friendly coastal area.

One local resident told Skynews.com.au they found the proposal “appalling” as the service was not needed in the residential Port Phillip Bay area. Another resident clarified to Skynews.com.au that the lack of transparency and reason behind operating the centre had created anxiety in the local community.

“If you provide rehabilitation you require a permit, but if you are providing the mental health services after those initial health requirements you don’t,” Mr Newbury said on Tuesday.Safety has been a recurring theme in the area with residents calling for a police station to curb crime after repeated home break-ins were reported in May.
