Brisbane Airport Corporation has cut a deal to ensure all airport operations – except flights – will be powered by renewable energy in just three years’ time.
Renewable energy from solar, wind and pumped hydro will power 100 per cent of Brisbane Airport operations – except flights – by 2025, Energy Minister Mick de Brenni announced on Sunday.
The cost of the energy deal was not revealed, with de Brenni saying the details were commercial-in-confidence. It also has an agreement with the 346.5MW Clarke Creek Wind Farm, north-west of Rockhampton, and a second wind farm atBetween Kingaroy and Bunya Mountains, 42 wind turbines will generate 250MW of renewable energy for the national electricity grid.
Wind farms like this one visited by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk near Kingaroy will help make Brisbane Airport Corporation carbon-neutral by 2025.De Graaff said the deal “ends our reliance on coal for power as we switch to solar and wind”, but he confirmed that the green energy would be more expensive in the short term.
