The brakes of the bus involved in the crash were tested last month and its driver had a “strong performance record” over a decades-long career, Brisbane City Council says.
A young woman has died after being pinned against a wall by a council bus that lost control on Edward Street and mounted a busy footpath during the evening peak hour.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash, but a council spokesman said on Friday there was speculation the bus driver suffered a medical incident after turning the corner from Ann Street. However, this has not been confirmed. “We are convinced that we have a very safe fleet, very safe operators. We absolutely take the duty to the city very seriously.”Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the bus driver has been released from hospital but will not return to work while the crash is being investigated.
