Queensland has passed tougher hate-crime laws, paving the way for a ban on Nazi symbols. Details of the death of cyclist Carolyn Lister in 2020, and the national policy decisions that led to it, have been laid out in a coroner’s report. Brisbane City is exploring three paths for increasing its green energy supplies.
Queensland parliament has passed laws to make it easier to lay vilification charges, lift maximum penalties for crimes motivated by hate, and also outlaw the display of banned symbols. The laws were announced in March in an effort to counter incidents including a pig’s head left at Gold Coast mosque and Nazi pamphlets being put in Brisbane mailboxes, and follow a committee inquiry which heard of an under-reporting of hate-motivated crimes.
Offenders will face up to six months’ jail for breaches of the symbol ban, covering social media posts and public display of tattoos that show an ideology or extreme prejudice against a particular religious, ethnic, gender or other group.“It is our hope that this new legislation will encourage members of our community to report serious vilification, because they will have greater confidence that perpetrators will be held to account,” Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath said in a statement.
