In an interview on Nine’s Today, CFMEU national secretary Zach Smith faced a barrage of questions over how much he knew about the allegations levelled against his union.Today host Karl Stevanovic repeatedly said it “defied belief” that Smith wouldn’t have heard anything about the CFMEU’s alleged criminal links reported by this masthead, AFR and 60 Minutes.
In fact, the union has taken the extraordinary step of placing the Victorian-Tasmanian branch into administration so it can conduct a thorough investigation – an investigation that will be at arm’s length and robust enough to hear any allegations, consider them properly and then take any appropriate action.”After suggesting the CFMEU’s national leadership was either “complicit, or just ignorant”, Stefanovic then accused Smith of using the “I know nothing defence”.
