With the state reporting its third case of meningococcal B this week, GPs are calling for Queenslanders to take advantage of government-funded vaccines to protect their infants, young children, and adolescents.The Royal Australian College of GPs said that while the government responded to calls for free vaccines earlier this year, uptake has been low across the state and some 40,000 at-risk people remained unvaccinated.
RACGP Queensland Chair Dr Cathryn Hester urged families to book vaccines as soon as possible.“Meningococcal disease is a very serious infection that can cause severe scarring, loss of limbs, brain damage and death,” she said.Queensland Health’s Tropical Public Health Services maintained the disease is “a relatively rare illness” and spread by close contact, after the third case of meningococcal was reported near Cairns this week.
