A 51-year-old man was being transferred from Thursday Island to Cairns Base Hospital after being bitten – possibly by a crocodile – while snorkelling in the ocean off Far North Queensland.
understands the male tourist was bitten on the hand while snorkelling with a tour group about 28 kilometres east of the exclusive,The island is off the right tip of Cape York, 600 kilometres north of Cairns and opposite Rocky Point.
The resort there is listed as a “Robinson Crusoe-style retreat”, while Queensland’s Department of Environment and Science describes the area “as known croc country”. The man – possibly from Brisbane, although that was yet to be confirmed – was reportedly in “good spirits” while awaiting transfer to Cairns by the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
The environment department confirmed it was aware of local media reports, but could not yet substantiate the attack.Credit:“We are aware of reports of a crocodile incident yesterday afternoon [May 27] near Haggerstone Island,” a spokesman said. “Wildlife officers have commenced an investigation and will work with the people involved to obtain further information.“Crocodiles in the open ocean can be difficult to locate as the animals often travel tens of kilometres per day.Obey all warning signs – they are there to keep you safe.Stay well away from croc traps – that includes fishing and boating.Stand back from the water’s edge when fishing, and don’t wade in to retrieve a lure.
