💧 “We kind of feel a vague concern that maybe not all is well in the natural world but kind of it looks okay,” Beccy Speight told theipaper, “And actually, once you look at what’s really going on, you can see these really rapid declines”
to mark the launch of Save Our Wild Isles, a joint campaign with the World Wildlife Fund and the National Trust.
Polling commissioned for the campaign showed that the majority of the British public were worried about nature in the UK but only a tiny fraction were aware of how poorly the country ranks internationally for its biodiversity. In reality, Britain ranks in the bottom tenth of all nations for how much of its natural environment has been preserved.
“We are one of the most biodiversity depleted countries in the world,” said Ms Speight, “Now, that’s because of lots of long term trends like industrialisation, etc etc. But what we have got left is not very intact, it’s particularly fragile.”, with 40 per cent of species having declined since 1970 – 97 per cent of wildflower meadows have been lost since the 1930s, while 38 million birds have disappeared from the skies since 1970. A quarter of all mammals are at risk of extinction.
