A veteran of the institution, Dr Peter Higgs oversaw the Greek and Roman department when colleagues noticed missing items turning up for sale online.

The British Museum is suing a former curator, accused of stealing treasures from the institution and selling them on eBay, in an attempt to force him to return them.Higgs was the head of the Greek and Roman department and had worked at the museum since 1993.

The court was told Higgs intended to dispute the claims, and he has not been charged with any criminal offence. The museum’s legal team told the court that Higgs may have sold items to at least 45 separate buyers over a 10-year period. The court heard Higgs altered the museum’s digital records to cover his tracks, after he became aware of a colleague’s suspicions. This included editing the time references and information about artefacts that had been removed, it was heard. The court heard he covered his tracks “using false names, creating false documents and manipulating records”.
