The British shipbuilder has outlined plans to restore its plans to build nine major warships in Adelaide, unveiling a design favouring missiles rather than sub-hunting capability.

The AUKUS plan to move to a fleet of nuclear-powered attack submarines, as well as key findings of the DSR to build up missile stocks, has prompted a re-evaluation of whether the Hunter-class is still right for the navy, leading to speculation the number of frigates to be ordered will be slashed.
“We are building what the Royal Australian Navy and the Commonwealth specified. This is what was asked for,” he said. “This is what happens when you create a vacuum. It’s time the government made a response to the surface fleet review, gave industry certainty and cracked on with the job. This is the point: we don’t have time,” he said.
