Brittany Higgins has told the Federal Court she went public with an allegation she had been raped in Parliament House by a colleague because she did not want to be “complicit” in a cover-up, after she broke down in tears giving evidence about the night of the alleged assault.
The former federal Liberal political staffer gave evidence on Wednesday for Ten as it defends a defamation suit brought against the network and journalist Lisa Wilkinson by her former colleague Bruce Lehrmann, who claims a February 2021 interview with Higgins alleged he was guilty of rape. “At the end of 2019, there was a media inquiry that came in about … an assault in Linda Reynolds’ office,” Higgins said.“So there was already people … who knew or who peripherally somehow knew about the assault in media circles in Canberra. It almost came up at Senate estimates. It was this like retraumatising event.”Higgins, who gave evidence the alleged assault happened in March 2019, said that by 2021, following news stories on related topics, she felt that she “couldn’t be silent about it any more
