Researchers at Trinity College Dublin have made a discovery that could explain why some people are able to resist viral infections. They did this by screening the immune systems of women who had been exposed to hepatitis C (HCV) through contaminated anti-D transfusions given over 40 years ago in Ire
, have significant implications for our understanding of viral resistance and the potential for developing therapies to treat infected individuals.
Cliona O’Farrelly, Professor of Comparative Immunology at Trinity’s School of Biochemistry and Immunology, is the senior author of the research article. The scientists ultimately recruited almost 40 women from the resistant group, alongside 90 women who were previously infected.
