In this Broken Hill prison, 70 per cent of inmates identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. The new jail manager decided it was time to prioritise their cultural care.
Broken Hill Correctional Centre held its first full NAIDOC Week as part of a push to better cater for its First Nations inmates.
Michelle Thompson, manager of security at the Broken Hill prison, says it's a sad but all-too-familiar reality. "Lately, with the new miss … the new boss, she's been doing a lot to keep us here on Country and try to rehabilitate us before we get out," he says.As manger of security, Michelle Thompson says she is determined to ensure Aboriginal inmates are better catered for culturally.Ms Thompson believes that by investing in more First Nations-focused programs within the prison, there will be flow-on effects for the inmates' rehabilitation.
The women here are the first in the facility to receive lessons in one of the local community's native languages, Barkindji. Every visitor is offered a johnny cake by the women, and as conversation ensues there is a warm curiosity about the presence of a camera and microphone.Nevertheless, amid all the giggles of nervousness, one woman puts her hand up for a yarn.ABC Broken Hill: Grace Atta"This is the only jail that I've been allowed to understand who I am," she says."Coming into custody and coming here has allowed me to seek the answers that I needed and to learn about the mob that I come from.
