Heather Pearce always had trouble attracting qualified professionals to her Broken Hill medical practice for long-term roles— until she made sure their kids had child care.

As parents in country towns and remote locations across Australia struggle to find child care for their kids, one woman in outback New South Wales has taken matters into her own hands.by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission found lower income, remote and First Nations people were adversely impacted by a lack of affordable child care .

She moved to Broken Hill for her husband's job while heavily pregnant, and wasn't sure what childcare options would be available. "So when you come to somewhere like Broken Hill there just isn't enough services to cater for the population publicly or privately." Ms Pearce said being able to attract and retain workers meant the centre was able to provide greater continuity of care to its patients, and there had been strong feedback from locals, who were enjoying being treated by the same practitioner.

"It really should be something that employers look at and how we can use this to overcome these issues with staffing," she said."It's something that the public system needs to start looking at and considering," she said. "The options are certainly reduced in rural and remote communities and sometimes there's actually no centre at all," she said.A new report has found Australia's childcare system doesn't work for many families — and it's not just about the moneyThis celebrity chef is a DC legend.
