The Denver Broncos interviewed Rex Ryan for their defensive coordinator opening Saturday, a league source confirmed to The Post.
The former New York Jets and Buffalo Bills head coach has been out of the league since losing his head coaching job in Buffalo after the 2016 season, but has a well-earned reputation as a defensive guru.
In his four seasons as Baltimore’s defensive coordinator from 2005-08, Ryan led the Ravens to three top-10 finishes in points allowed, including the top scoring defense in 2006. After taking over as head coach of the New York Jets, his defenses were Nos. 1 and 6, respectively, in points allowed in his first two seasons — both of which ended in the AFC Championship Game.
Ryan’s defenses never again finished in the top 10 in points allowed over his final six seasons as head coach — four with the Jets and two with Buffalo — and he was let go by both franchises. Ryan is the second former head coach known to have interviewed for the defensive coordinator opening on new head coach Sean Payton’s staff. Former Broncos coach Vance Joseph also interviewed for the position on Friday, a source confirmed.
