📬 New Broncos Mailbag • Javonte Williams' workload • What is dead money • Mike Shanahan's HOF chances • And more...

Denver Post Broncos writer Parker Gabriel posts his Broncos Mailbag periodically during the offseason. Why is John Elway still in the building? His dreadful decisions are the reason the Broncos are in the shape they’re in. George Paton’s job has been to fix Elway’s mistakes.

But yeah, overall, general managers typically end up thriving or failing based on quarterbacks and head coaches. And you don’t often get more than one or two swings at the tree on both fronts. Paton understands that, as he made clear in December when Denver fired Hackett. This gets into Andy’s next question, but it all kind of works together. When a player signs a deal, any money paid as a signing bonus gets prorated over the life of the contract . So teams that are willing to pay big bonuses up front – Denver did this quite a bit this spring – can spread out the cap hits. When a player signs a five-year contract with a $25 million signing bonus, it gets charged as $5 million against the cap each of those five years.

The other consideration is, if you post-June 1 a player, you have to carry his cap hit until June 1. Teams have to be in cap compliance all the time, so that means budgeting the cut into your plans through free agency before the cap relief actually hits in the summer. Your second question has a much shorter answer: If a player’s contract is guaranteed for injury, that means if he suffers an injury doing team activities, the team owes him that money if it releases him. So let’s say a player in the NFL has his 2024 base salary guaranteed for injury and blows out his knee during a Week 15 game this fall. If the team cuts him after the season, he’s still owed that 2024 base salary because it was guaranteed for injury.
