Brooke Satchwell, known for her surprising and award-winning performances, is returning to the stage after six years in the time-bending epic Oil at Sydney Theatre Company.

There are three things you should know about Brooke Satchwell . She’s a hugger. Firm. She really holds you. And when she speaks, she really looks at you. And the other thing? She has great taste in socks.

“I don’t leave the stage for 125-odd pages,” she says. “And that’s like the set-up for a joke. What I was saying to everyone, when we started rehearsals, was, ‘A bunch of strangers walk into a room and talk, colonialism, capitalism, motherhood, feminism, non-renewable resources and climate change. What could go wrong?’”is a time-travelling epic that takes in more than 160 years, from oil’s early uses at home through to its destructive effect on the planet and what that means for our future.

It’s a lot, but it’s a challenge Satchwell sought out, something that’s taken what she calls “radical acts of self-acceptance” to get here. “And I know that’s very strong in my personal life. But I think, because of the way I’ve clambered my way into this industry over 27 years, and largely been driven by instinct and the seat of my pants, I probably hadn’t .

“And since I haven’t gone overseas, I’ve weirdly never had the things that would traditionally give you that kind of leverage. But in my own weird way, or the little times that I’ve followed my heart and done something because I was just curious about it, or I wanted to connect with that person, or it didn’t make sense, but I just trusted my gut, they’ve been the tiny footsteps that have paved the way to getting to here.
