Retiring Alabama U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby has long been known and praised for “bringing home the bacon” to his home state with financial influence and support from Mobile to Huntsville. On the campaign trail seeking to fill Shelby’s seat and…

On the campaign trail seeking to fill Shelby’s seat and running against Shelby’s former chief of staff, U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks recently took aim at that financial influence and support that will be Shelby’s political legacy.

“I can understand people who love that gravy train, who love all that pork barrel stuff and like what Richard Shelby does,” Brooks continued. “And that’s fine – this is a republic and you have a choice. But I’m concerned about us going into bankruptcy. And so we have a difference of opinion here. But he apparently thinks Katie Britt is exactly like him. And you can decide if that’s what you want.”

“Again, Mo Brooks is out of touch,” Shelby spokeswoman Blair Taylor said in a statement to AL.com. “If he takes issue with Sen. Shelby’s long-standing work to generate economic development and good-paying jobs in the state of Alabama, that’s his prerogative. I urge him to explain that to the millions of people in Alabama who benefit from these investments and the resulting growth throughout the state – particularly in his district.

“Name someone who’s been in a debt junkie spending position more than he has, since our total debt was less than a trillion dollars,” Brooks said.

“As she speaks about on the campaign trail, one of Katie’s top priorities in the Senate will be balancing the budget and tackling the national debt, which is an existential crisis for our country,” campaign spokesman Sean Ross said in a statement to AL.com. “Katie was proudly the first candidate in this race to sign the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, committing never to vote to raise taxes as Alabama’s Senator.

In Brooks’ hometown of Huntsville, Shelby’s influence has been particularly pronounced. He is credited with helping guide U.S. Space Command to Redstone Arsenal as well as the FBI, whose investment has topped $2.4 billion. The Missile & Space Intelligence Center at the arsenal is named for Shelby. The senator has also been a guiding hand in a new $110 million federal courthouse soon to begin construction in downtown Huntsville.
