CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The story all week was the status of quarterback Deshaun Watson and the Browns’ decision to start P.J. Walker at quarterback this week with Watson unable to play.
The formula in this game was simple, at least simple if you forgot about the juggernaut on the other side. They didn’t quite dominate at the end -- San Francisco had a chance to win the game before a field goal attempt went wide right with six seconds left -- but we’re not here to nitpick a win like this.There was a moment when the Browns faced a fourth-and-1 from their own 43 with a chance to keep the ball and work the clock and it had to go against every bone in Kevin Stefanski’s body to eventually punt the football back to the 49ers.
Sunday wasn’t a season-saving win, but it was cleansing. A few weeks of quarterback “will he or won’t he” had everyone feeling a little tired and this game was a strong cup of coffee as the Browns enter a stretch of games where they can make up some ground, especially if Watson comes back and picks up where he left off against Tennessee.The only chance the 49ers had against Jim Schwartz’s group was an interception return that set them up at the 8-yard line.
