Berry declined to name the player but said the Browns were close to making a trade this week. 'It didn’t come to fruition from a compensation package,” he said.
BEREA, Ohio — Browns GM Andrew Berry revealed Wednesday that he almost bolstered the team’s talent before Tuesday’s 4 p.m. trade deadline.
He declined to say who it was, but the Browns were primarily interested in players that could help them long term, and not just half-year rentals. It meant they would’ve had to work out the parameters of an extension to pull off a deal. “We always have open dialogue with our guys so none of that necessarily happens in a vacuum, just to be clear. Kareem has been excellent every day that he has been in the building since August. I think you all know how passionate he is, how much he cares about this team and how much he cares about this city. We know he is going to have a really strong second half and are looking forward to helping us continue to win games, like he did on Monday night.
Berry admitted that the philosophy changed slightly after the Browns beat the Bengals 32-13 Monday Night to keep their playoff hopes alive. Instead of parting ways with players such as cornerback Greedy Williams and others, they kept them for quality depth down the stretch.
