One in three children in South Australia are being notified to the Department for Child Protection before they turn 18, according to the department.But it isn’t just a problem facing the state - it’s affecting kids all around the country.This week, a woman was arrested after allegedly stabbing her two young children on a motorway in Adelaide’s north.
The Department for Child Protection’s deputy chief executive Fiona Ward told 7NEWS the department is working closely with both the SA Police and health authorities to ensure the children’s safety and wellbeing.Pictured: Little boy at centre of alleged neglect probe as family friends speakIn July, six-year-old Charlie was found unresponsive in her family home in Munno Para, and died in hospital, sparking a police investigation into suspected neglect.
“The majority of families reported to child protection have multiple and complex needs with active domestic violence, unmanaged mental illness, current substance addiction and housing instability as key underlying factors driving children’s experience of abuse and neglect,” she said.The problems aren’t just about South Australia - they’re happening across the country.
