The then 19-year-old had been drinking heavily before he forced entry to the house and hit Ms Russo repeatedly in the head with a piece of wood when she confronted him.Her eldest son, Lourence Russo, broke down outside court after Mabo was sentenced in the Townsville Supreme Court today."Mum in herself was a woman who enjoyed the simple things in life — she liked to stop and smell the roses, she loved her family and all her friends.
"It's hard to say how much we're going to miss a mother, a mother-in-law, a partner, a grandmother or a daughter.
