Being made redundant by email is now common in technology companies. It’s a brutal tactic that dehumanises so-called collaborative workplaces notwithstanding the generous payouts.
When Salesforce made 10 per cent of its Australian workforce redundant in January, it emailed the affected employees – the same brutal tactic used by Mark Zuckerberg at Meta Platforms, the owner of Facebook.
After speaking to former Salesforce and Meta employees in Australia and the UK, it is clear to Chanticleer that there is a huge gulf between the friendly and caring workplace rhetoric, and the harsh reality of how employees are discarded to cut costs. In Australia, the estimated 300 people made redundant by Salesforce last month as part of its global cost-cutting campaign that got rid of 7000 people, the employees were notified by email.
“Those outside the US will receive a similar level of support, and our local processes will align with employment laws in each country. The employees being affected aren’t just colleagues. They’re friends. They’re family. Please reach out to them.”In Australia, the affected employees at Salesforce received an email saying, “someone will reach out to you shortly for consultation – your role may be affected”.
It is believed this was a consequence of head office in the US running a data analysis of each employee’s contribution and selecting employees who would be part of the job cutting.
