Outfielder Bryce Harper agrees to record-breaking, 13-year contract with Philadelphia Phillies
CLOSE Bryce Harper is officially off the market. The former MVP will become a member of the Philadelphia Phillies. USA TODAYBryce Harper agreed to a 13-year, $330 million deal -- the biggest overall free-agent contract in North American sports history -- with the Philadelphia Phillies, an official told USA TODAY Sports.
Harper, who has 184 career home runs and a lifetime .900 OPS, rejected a 10-year, $300 million contract offer from the Washington Nationals in September. Harper's ascension coincided with the Nationals' rise to power in the NL East, with the team making its first postseason appearance in Harper's rookie year. Washington won the division again in 2014, 2016 and 2017, but never made it past the Division Series.
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 draft, Harper has been a household name name since he was 16, appearing on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 2009 touted as "baseball's chosen one" and the "most exciting prodigy since LeBron."
