US President Joe Biden endorsed the deal as his administration works to ease a nationwide shortage of formula.
The Biden administration earlier this month agreed to fly emergency supplies from Europe in a bid to ease the shortage that has left shelves empty and parents scrambling to find food for their children, especially those with special dietary needs.
“Steps like the one the agency is taking today means more infant formula will be available to parents and caregivers in the weeks and months ahead,” FDA commissioner Robert M. Califf said.“I’ve got more good news: 27.5 million bottles of safe infant formula manufactured by Bubs Australia are coming to the United States,” Mr Biden said on Twitter.
The Australian deal comes a week after Swiss manufacturer Nestlé also sent supplies to the United States, while Kendamil in the UK has also been approved to import its formulas. “We were actually the first infant formula manufacturer in the world to submit our application to the FDA under this new infant formula enforcement discretion policy,” she said.
