It was a big day for one of baseball’s greatest hitters. David Ortiz was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and as always, gave love to New England. BuckinBoston has more on Papi's big day:
ByCOOPERSTOWN, N.Y. — The turnout for Sunday’s Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony was announced as 35,000, a fitting estimate considering that’s about what theget for a typical game at Fenway Park. It shouldn’t have been surprising, then, that the “Papi! Papi! Papi!” chants began even before David Ortiz stepped up to the dais to deliver his induction speech. As Hall of Fame events go, this one was a Red Sox home game.
“Thank you for being there for me always,” he said, speaking to his family, after which he added, “… just like your mother, Tiffany Ortiz, wherever she is right now. Thank you very much, Tiffany, for supporting me during my career.” These are familiar themes during Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, of course. But what set Ortiz apart was that it was a departure from his usual game, which is usually laugh-a-minute verbal bombast. What used to be pregame and postgame clubhouse shtick is now an industry for Ortiz, who has made a seamless tradition to TV talking head and commercial pitchman. He’s the Charles Barkley of baseball, but with championship rings.
Yes, he pointed out former teammate Dustin Pedroia and said, “Pee Wee grabbed me by the neck one time and he told me, ‘If you keep on pulling the ball, I’m gonna whoop you.’ And guess what? Big Papi got caught up on fire.” That was funny. From the moment he appeared on the stage we should have known we were going to get Big Reflective Papi. His clothing choices are often really, really out there, everything from designer distressed jeans to stuff right out of the 1970s Elton John playbook, but on this day he wore a strikingly well-tailored blue suit, white shirt and red tie. The pocket square matched the tie. These were the clothes of a man planning to deliver a message, not a monologue.
