Holiday and second homeowners will receive multiple $300 energy bill credits, after the government said all households would automatically receive the benefit.

Already a subscriber?Holiday and second homeowners will receive multiple $300 energy bill credits, after the Albanese government said automatically applying the discount to all households was the “simplest” way to deliver the $3.5 billion subsidy.

The government said more than 10 million eligible households would benefit from the power bill relief, as well as small businesses. “Frankly, I think the money would be better provided by way of support to those more in need,” Mr Dutton said. Means testing or restricting the rebates would be administratively complex for energy retailers to know if a customer was also receiving a $300 credit for a different property, unless customers were forced to apply for only one discount.

Mr Albanese said the $3.5 billion household energy bill discounts and $1.9 billion in extra rent assistance would help reduce inflation by 0.5 of a percentage point. The broader the household and small business energy bill subsidy is applied, the more it mechanically lowers the reported consumer price index in the short term.
