Commissioner of taxation will be allowed discretion to not use a taxpayer’s refund to offset old tax debts
The Australian government has opened the door for robotax debt retrieval by the ATO to be put on ice in the Australian federal budget 2024.The Australian government has opened the door for robotax debt retrieval by the ATO to be put on ice in the Australian federal budget 2024.
Dubbed robotax, the Australian Taxation Office campaign was designed to raise as much as $15bn by pursuing an assortment of historical debts, many of which were inadvertently accrued decades ago and previously deemed uneconomic to pursue. The amounts are nearly impossible to contest given many of the alleged debts date well before the five-year retention period most taxpayers are required to keep records for.
The ATO had argued a review of its processes found that it was obliged to collect the old tax debts, but it has apologised for its approach.
