Trent Buhagiar put his goalscoring woes behind him with a match-winning double to help Sydney FC register a dramatic 3-2 victory over the Wanderers
in front of what was almost certainly the lowest crowd for an A-League Men derby in Sydney.
That made it 3-1, prompting Wanderers coach Mark Rudan to react with a quadruple change – and it had an immediate impact, with substitute Tate Russell heading in a speculative long ball two minutes after he came on. But it was still very a nervous finish for the Sky Blue faithful, with Thomas Aquilina hitting the woodwork late and a contentious Western Sydney penalty shout for a handball on James Donachie turned down by referee Alireza Faghani and ignored by the VAR.
This result vaults Sydney back into the fourth spot, although their position is deceiving as they have now played 21 games – and all the teams below them bar Adelaide United have played two or three fewer matches. For the Wanderers, finals football is still possible but not likely based on their inconsistent form and inability to control matches.
