Tax Office data shows how $88 billion in JobKeeper flowed through COVID, with restaurant operators, construction firms and livestock producers getting help.
The outer suburbs of Melbourne, Queensland’s tourist hotspots and sheep and beef producers across NSW all relied heavily on JobKeeper to get through the COVID-19 lockdowns as young Australians ran down their superannuation balances.
The Tax Office data, released as part of its annual taxation statistics report, shows more than 80,000 people in the Melbourne suburbs of Cranbourne, Werribee, Hoppers Crossing and Craigieburn were paid through the JobKeeper program. They were the four suburbs in the country most dependent on the payment.
That was more than double the 4014 sheep, beef and grain producers in Queensland who received $150.4 million. Another 3024 in Western Australia were paid $119 million; 2756 in Victoria received $84.5 million, while across South Australia 1838 producers were given $66.8 million. Outside traditional mixed farming enterprises, JobKeeper was also used by 384 dairy farmers, nine deer producers, all in Victoria, 1693 mushroom and vegetable growers and 2673 fruit and tree nut orchardists.
“It allowed some farmers to keep hold of trained staff, which was hugely valuable as the worker shortage went from bad to worse.”
