When Alex Harvey first decided to track her spending, she was stunned by some of the patterns she uncovered.

Now a money coach who teaches others how to limit their spending, Alex recognised she was getting a short-term buzz from shopping at the expense of her medium and longer-term financial goals.If your New Year plans include getting on top of your money worries, tracking your spending is a good place to start.

Roslyn Russell, finance and marketing professor at the RMIT School of Economics, says creating a money diary can provide you with a choice of strategies."You can decide to reduce your spending or do nothing at all, however, nothing will happen unless there is an awareness there,” she says.
