By 2028, an estimated 3 million jobs will sit open in the skilled trades, positions that come to life as the backbone of American growth. From appliance techs to carpenters, a variety of profitable career opportunities offer economic mobility and career growth. “Expanding the visibility of women who are already in the industry is a huge part of getting more women in trades,” said Basmayor. “In high school, I had never met a woman who worked in construction and I didn’t know it was something I could do. I was worried about my safety and my ability to be feminine, and I’ve realized that it’s completely unfounded.”When Basmayor’s high school partnered with the local community college to offer mini-courses in the skilled trades, her passion ignited.
Besides variety, women like Basmayor can look forward to good pay and other perks in this field including flexibility and autonomy. General electricians make a median salary of $57,350, depending on location, specialty and experience. But seasoned electricians and HVAC technicians can make $100,000 or more, especially when there is high demand for premium or emergency services.
