During high school, and middle school Tim Rohrer was isolated, bullied and made to feel different.

Timmy’s Story: A Story About Autism and Friendship!“A disability does not determine a person’s character,” said Rohrer, 21. “I don’t want to be labeled that way. I’d rather be viewed as a regular person.”

“We always try to have self-advocates, people like Tim who have been through the systems in New Jersey,” he said. “Seeing Tim here is very special. We saw the beginning of his expression to the world, his self-advocacy and general advocacy for students with disabilities. Psychologist Corrine Catalano is assistant director for the Consultation Services Center for Autism and Early Childhood Mental Health at Montclair State University. She agrees with Rohrer.

“Regardless of any factors that often separate us,” he said, “we want a student to walk into any school and feel welcomed, supported, seen, and to know that we will do everything possible to help them.” “As a mother, it is difficult to see your child going through that,” Tim’s mom, Amy Rohrer, recalled.

Rohrer’s pamphlet has been translated for a school in Latvia. He is working on a sequel to his first book, and he’ll be doing a workshop in October on self-advocacy and raising awareness in schools for“We like social things too,” Rohrer said, including fishing, kayaking, and spending time with his dog, Cosmo.
