Thousands of Sydney bus services are breaching COVID-19 social distancing requirements each day, including dozens in the epicentre of the latest outbreak.on Thursday that about 3300 services are unable to keep passenger numbers low enough to meet social distancing caps, two weeks after itanalysis has found all but two bus routes listed as exposure sites were found to have recorded at least one service as being over capacity in the past week.
Google’s data, which uses aggregated, anonymised data from products including Google Maps to show movement trends over time, shows in the week after the first stage of Sydney’s lockdown public transport use fell 64 per cent below its pre-COVID baseline. Retail and recreation movements were 34 per cent lower. Google reported falls a week after Victoria’s “snap-lockdown” were 75 per cent less for public transport movement and 47 per cent less for retail and recreation.
Sydney’s buses have been operating beyond safe distancing guidelines, as this photo taken on Thursday shows.A Transport for NSW spokeswoman said they are monitoring “areas of stress across the network”, and “working through” the timetable after adding close to 1000 extra public transport services since last Monday. About 800 of those are bus services.
As more bus services are added to the exposure lists, the Transport Workers Union is calling for all drivers, regardless of their employer, to be given vaccine leave.
