An entire Queensland town on the border with New South Wales has been evacuated today as a bushfire burns dangerously close.
Officers are helping hundreds of residents from the town, about six hours south-west of Brisbane, with evacuations.Residents have been evacuated from the south-west Queensland town of Dirranbandi due to bushfire danger. Events began about 2.15pm yesterday when emergency services began tackling a grass fire about 4km outside Dirranbandi.
Authorities deployed 13 fire crews, including aerial water bombers, to the isolated town, and battled the blaze into the night. An exclusion zone was being put in place and an evacuation centre was set up about 95km away in the township of Saint George. But those fleeing the blaze will be waking up without electricity today because power poles were damaged by the fire.Dirranbandi has a population of 610, according to the 2021 census.
