The intense smoke and dust from the catastrophic bushfires has hit global mining giant BHP's east coast coal operations.

The intense smoke and dust from the catastrophic bushfires has hit global mining giant BHP's east coast coal operations, withsaying air quality has been affected and the company is "monitoring the situation".

"We are monitoring the situation and if air quality continues to deteriorate then operations could be constrained further in the second half of the year," the company said. "Production and cost guidance is unchanged, and we remain on track to deliver slightly higher production than last year. Our six major development projects are progressing well, and we continue to advance our exploration programs in petroleum and copper.”

Total copper production increased 7 per cent mainly as a result of a boost in output to 602 kilotonnes at the group's Escondida mine in Chile.
