A rescue helicopter is helping to search for an 'experienced' bushwalker who failed to check in with friends over the weekend after a challenging Tasmanian hike.

Police said on Tuesday morning a search operation had been launched for a man in his 20s who was hiking along the Eastern Arthurs Traverse. Concerns were raised when he failed to make contact with friends as planned. He was last heard from on Friday.
