’s fight over campaign fundraising came to a head on the debate stage Thursday night, after weeks ofover campaign transparency.
Buttigieg, who recently—at Warren's urging—opened his fundraisers to press and released the names of his bundlers , was unapologetic about his decision to do big-ticket fundraisers and accept campaign money from the one percent. “This is our chance, this is our only chance to defeat, and we shouldn't try to do it with one hand tied behind our back,” he said. “We need to bring everyone to our side in this fight . . . and if you can drop $1,000 without blinking, that's great.
“If you can't say no to a donor, then you have no business running for office in the first place,” Buttigieg retorted. “But also senator, your campaign right now, as we speak, is funded in part by money you transferred, having raised it at those exact big-ticket fundraisers you now denounce. Did it corrupt you, senator? Of course not.” He added that “These purity tests shrink the most important election.”, who insisted, “I did not come here to listen to this argument.
“If you want to talk about a capacity to win, try putting together a coalition to bring you back to office with 80% of the vote as a gay dude in's Indiana,” Buttigieg responded. But to Klobuchar, whose campaign has relied on her strong support among Midwestern Minnesota voters, this experience was not enough. “If you had won in Indiana, that would be one thing,” Klobuchar responded. “You tried, and you lost by 20 points.
