New Zealand first introduced extra paid parental leave for babies born before 37 weeks in 2016, but Australia has no provisions.
Preparing for the birth of her first child, Kat Averill had a list of things she was expecting to get done before his arrival.
A new campaign supported by a Labor MP is asking the federal government to follow New Zealand and Britain and introduce additional parental leave for families with children who require neonatal care after birth. The researchers also found mothers of preterm babies delayed their return to work until their child was almost three, on average, while those whose babies were born full term went back to work after an average of 1.9 years.
Averill is yet to return to work, due to her paediatrician’s concerns about her son’s immunity in a childcare setting.
