BYD has updated its Atto 3 electric SUV with the Evo badge, bringing rear-wheel drive, a larger battery, increased range, and faster charging to the Australian market.
BYD has given its pioneering Atto 3 electric SUV a mid-life update, introducing the Atto 3 Evo in Australia. The updated model was showcased to Australia n automotive media in New South Wales for a first local drive. This marks the first substantial mid-life update for a BYD model already on sale locally since the brand launched in Australia in mid-2022.
BYD Atto 3 Evo Pricing and Variants
Prices for the Atto 3 Evo start at $41,990 before on-road costs. The outgoing Atto 3 was available in two grades priced at $39,990 and $44,990 before on-road costs. The revised powertrain lineup means the old and new grades are not directly comparable.
The entry-level Evo Dynamic retains the outgoing Atto 3 Premium's powertrain, making the Extended Range base version $3,000 less than before. The Evo Premium brings a new electrical architecture, larger battery, more power, and greater driving range for $2,000 more than the old Atto 3 flagship.
Interior and Technology Enhancements
The interior has been refreshed with a redesigned centre console, steering wheel, and instrument display. The tech has been updated with BYD's latest infotainment software. The touchscreen infotainment system remains large and features a heavily updated user interface, while the instrument display has grown larger and sharper.
However, the interior has lost some of its unique character. The old model had a quirky design with a tiny instrument display and a huge aviation-style gear selector. Now, only the bendy shapes and fittings remain, with everything else tidied up. The guitar strings on the doors are still present and tuned, providing a unique flair.
The centre console has been simplified, with the gear shift handle replaced by a steering column stalk. There is also a lack of physical buttons, with many functions moved to the touchscreen. Climate controls are now more accessible through the always-on ribbon at the bottom of the screen.
Performance and Battery Upgrades
Under the skin, the biggest overhaul has occurred. The flagship trim is now rear-wheel drive, has a larger battery pack with increased driving range, more power and torque, and can charge much faster than before. The new electrical architecture contributes to these improvements.
Exterior changes are minimal, with slight tweaks to the front and rear bumpers, a new alloy wheel design, and a new rear lighting signature consistent with BYD's newest SUVs. The Evo suffix denotes an evolution of the original Atto 3, not a completely new model.
Competitive Landscape and Market Context
The Atto 3 competes in the small SUV segment, though it is officially classed as a mid-size SUV. Rivals include the MG ZS EV, priced at $47,990 drive-away, the Geely EX5 at $45,990 plus on-road costs, and the Kia Niro at $47,600 plus on-road costs.
Since BYD's official launch in Australia in mid-2022, the brand has rapidly advanced its electrified powertrain technology. The Atto 3 was the model that put BYD on the map in Australia, making it fitting that it receives this substantial update.
The Atto 3 Evo represents a significant step forward for BYD in the Australian market, with improved performance, range, and technology, though it faces stiff competition in the growing electric SUV segment.
