With the state borders fully open, interstate interest in Queensland remains high, particularly in the real estate market.
Victorian and NSW residents sick of lengthy lockdowns rented Queensland accommodation in their droves, and now many have chosen to buy homes in the Sunshine State.Credit:“I think in the earlier days [of the pandemic] we saw lots of people moving up here from interstate and renting ... there was a huge extra demand from interstate visitors,” said Antonia Mercorella, the chief executive of the Real Estate Institute of Queensland.
Since Saturday morning, interstate travellers have not needed a border pass or a negative test, and the unvaccinated have avoided quarantine. The strongest demand was coming from NSW and Victoria and, with the border rules gone, this was expected to increase, according to the REIQ.“Queensland offers affordability compared to Melbourne and Sydney, the state also has liveability - particularly in the throes of COVID when people are looking for a better quality of life,” she said.
“But we have a very strong future ahead. What we have to offer is more valued than it has been in the past – open spaces, open water, clean air, and a diversity of experiences.
