The Liberals have claimed that a resounding byelection win shows Victorians are sick of Daniel Andrews, despite Labor not running a candidate.

A buoyant Victorian Opposition Leader John Pesutto has declared that a thumping Liberal victory in the Warrandyte byelection marked a “referendum” on the Andrews government, despite Labor not running a candidate.

Nicole Werner, the daughter of Chinese-Malaysian migrants and a former youth pastor at Planetshakers evangelical Christian Pentecostal megachurch, increased the Liberal Party’s primary vote by 10 per cent as she defeated Greens candidate Tomas Lightbody. Nicole Werner was on track to secure more than 60 per cent of the primary vote on Saturday night and was headed towards a two-party preferred vote of 69.8 per cent ahead of Greens candidate Tomas Lightbody .Celebrating the byelection victory, which was brought on by the retirement of Liberal MP Ryan Smith, Mr Pesutto told Liberal supporters at Ringwood Bowls Club on Saturday night there would be an “earthquake” rumbling in the Labor camp.

The Liberal leader on Sunday said: “People are fed up with waste, mismanagement, corruption, and the way Victoria is being led.” Labor chose not to run a candidate in the seat, which has been blue since 1988, saying it was not worth spending $500,000 on a campaign given its dominance in the lower house.
