After a tumultuous two years, voting on Saturday suggests NSW hasn’t made up its mind about the Coalition.
But voters in Strathfield were sceptical of the Labor Party, demonstrating that the federal election will be fought city-by-city, suburb-by-suburb and town-by-town.
Even though Labor has inched up one lower house seat to 36, Saturday’s four by-elections didn’t deliver joyous news to the opposition either. The overall swing to the Labor Party was around 7 per cent. The average anti-government swing in NSW by-elections over the past 20 years is more than 10 per cent, according to a Tasmania-based psephologist, Kevin Bonham.Independent Elizabeth Farrelly won 9.5 per cent of the votes. The development critic lost acolumn after flirting with Labor candidature.
